What are the rules of the CBS News Vice-Presidential Debate?
CBS News announced the rules of the vice-presidential debate on Friday 27 September in a statement.
The statement clarified that there would be no live studio audience at the debate, no opening statements and that microphones would not be muted.
Each candidate will get two minutes to answer a question followed by one minute for rebuttals.
The most recent debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump operated under ABC News’ set of rules.

The CBS debate will be moderated by CBS Evening News anchor Norah O’Donnell and CBS News foreign affairs correspondent and Face the Nation moderator Margaret Brennan.
What happened in the recent Presidential Debates?
The first presidential debate of the 2024 presidential election cycle took place on Thursday 27 June (AEST) in Atlanta.
It was the first debate between a sitting and former president.
Approximately one month after the first debate, President Joe Biden dropped out of the race, endorsing his Vice President Kamala Harris and encouraging Democrats to rally behind her.
On Wednesday 11 September (AEST), Harris and Trump had their first debate in Philadelphia.
It is unclear as to whether or not there will another debate between the two candidates.
Harris has formally accepted CNN’s invitation to a second debate, while at a rally in North Carolina, Trump told supporters he would not be doing another debate as he has “already done two.”
“It’s just too late — voting has already started,” he said.
