Top new series coming to SBS On Demand in July 2024

This Emmy-nominated miniseries starring Andrew Garfield is based on the hit 2003 non-fiction book of the same name by Jon Krakauer. It follows Latter-day Saint police detective Jeb Pyre, whose faith is put to the test after he is tasked with investigating a case linked directly to his church: the brutal murder of a mother and her baby daughter. How can one reconcile with their core beliefs when they are being used to justify dark and insidious behaviours?

Former K9 dog Rex and deft detective Hudson return with four more seasons of crime-solving action. From an assassination at a dog show to a murder below the Atlantic Ocean, this lovable duo will stop at nothing to unravel even the most puzzling of crimes. With this suite of episodes, we’ll see the first case the inseparable detectives solved together, as well as some of their most challenging mysteries to date.

Therapy can be incredibly healing, but it can also be educational and at times, entertaining. Couples therapist Orna Guralnik returns to guide four couples through the tried and tested 20-week therapy program. As always, we get to sit in on this process thanks to a one-way mirror, watching the couples learn from each other, argue with one another and unpack some serious trauma. By focusing less on dramatics and more on interpersonal relationships, Couples Therapy reveals just how much work it takes to truly heal.

The Palace.

The year is 1988. The German Democratic Republic (GDR) is in a political slumber and socialism is believed to be “invincible” as ever. As the GDR approaches its 40th anniversary, only one thing is at the front of mind for the dancers of the Friedrichstadt-Palast, and that’s their spectacular “Jubilee” show. Christine Steffen is preparing to perform her long-awaited solo, when she runs into the twin sister she never knew she had. Stunned and in disbelief, the two unpack the mystery of their origins and learn more about their respective lives in the East and the West.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 4.

Miriam “Midge” Maisel has the perfect, pristine life. She’s entirely supportive of her husband and his struggling comedy career, until he bombs on stage and blames her for it. Once her husband leaves her for good, her wonderful life begins to fall apart, until fate leads her back to the comedy club where everything first went wrong. There, Midge learns to find her voice, and discovers that while comedy may not be her ex-husbands calling, it might just be hers.

Plat du Tour season 5

Internationally renowned chef Guillaume Brahimi returns to celebrate the wonders of French and Italian cuisine in new and exciting ways. Using the Tour de France route as inspiration, Brahimi cooks up delicious dishes roused by local produce, the warmth and expertise of local artisans and the gorgeous landscape of each of the 21 stages of the race. Along the way he learns unusual nuggets of history that make this gastronomic journey all the more intriguing.

Dinosaur season 1, episode 2.

Set in Glasgow, Dinosaur is a heartwarming Scottish drama about a young woman named Nina (Ashley Storrie), whose life is upended by news that her sister and best friend is getting married to a man she’s known for six weeks. Being thrust into the middle of planning a possibly-maybe-not ill-conceived wedding would be hard for anyone, let alone someone who is navigating their own personal challenges and stoking the flames of a new romance. Dinosaur is a poignant and realistic display of living with autism, which is only heightened by Storrie’s lived experience with the disorder.

Two months after her suspension from the force, Detective Inspector Rachita Ray returns to homicide to investigate a fatal shooting outside a hospital. There she discovers the victims: Frank Chapman, the head of a notorious crime family and a local nurse caught in the crossfire. Will D.I. Ray be able to uncover the truth behind this murder before tensions rise on the streets of Birmingham? Is this a simple case of a turf war between gangs turned violent or something far more sinister?

Spies of Terror.

This espionage thriller is based on the 2018 book Les Espions de la Terreur by investigative journalist Matthieu Suc, which looks at the aftermath of the November 13 terror attacks in Paris, 2015. It follows members of the Directorate-General for Internal Security (DGSI) and the Directorate-General for External Security (DGSE) as they hunt down those responsible for the attacks, while faced with the perilous threat of further violence.

We’re All Gonna Die (Even Jay Baruchel).

Jay Baruchel is obsessed with the apocalypse. Which kind of apocalypse you may ask? Well, all of them. Super-volcanoes erupting and changing the Earth’s climate irrevocably? Tick. Alien invasion? Tick. Nuclear catastrophe? Boom. In this mini series, Baruchel explores all the ways the Earth could meet its end, discussing a multitude of potential catastrophes with only the finest of death, doom and conspiracy experts.
