The Young Lovers

Spring is the perfect time for second chances and do-overs, and in French language film The Young Lovers, seventy-year-old Shauna (Fanny Ardant) is given the opportunity to revisit a connection from her past. When her former lover Pierre (Melvil Poupaud) turns up in her life once again after fifteen years, both he and Audrey are surprised to discover that the spring fling they once had has the potential to turn into something more. Now a widow, mother, and grandmother, Shauna wants to prove that growing older is no barrier to love. The relationship, however, is not without complications; the age gap, not to mention the judgement of those around them, creates chaos in Pierre’s life and leaves Shauna wondering if revisiting the past is ever a good idea.

Meet the Patels

Documentary film Meet the Patels, directed by siblings Geeta and Ravi Patel, follows Ravi’s very real journey to find the woman of his dreams. There’s just one problem: he may have already found her, but she’s white, and he doubts his parents will ever approve. A trip to India during ‘wedding season’ post-break up sees Ravi attempt to find a suitable match with varying levels of success. Though Ravi’s experience of the Indian equivalent of the ‘spring wedding’ surge is entertaining to say the least, the documentary also raises important questions about the challenge of balancing cultural expectations with the search for true compatibility in immigrant families, and affirms that love has the potential to triumph over difference if one is willing to give it a chance.

Good Morning and Good Night

There’s nothing like a classic rom-com, and more specifically a heartwarming meet cute, to put you in the mood for spring, and though Vietnamese language film Good Morning and Good Night is true to the genre, the meet cute in question sparks a musical twist that’s entirely its own. Tam (Trần Lê Thúy Vy), a musician, unexpectedly meets Thanh (Hà Quốc Hoàng), a taxi driver, and their morning meeting leads to the pair spending the whole day together. As they wander around the city, singing songs about life, love and hopes for the future, it appears that this could be the start of a special connection, but unbeknownst to Tam, it is Thanh’s last day in Saigon. Can their relationship continue blossom in spite of the obstacles?

Dating Amber

Amber (Lola Petticrew) and Eddie (Fionn O’Shea), the protagonists of coming-of-age film Dating Amber, are two high school classmates growing up in a conservative Irish community who decide to pretend to date each other to hide their sexuality. Initially, their fake relationship goes a long way towards tempering the personal challenges and societal expectations they are trying to avoid, but the pair’s trips to Dublin immerses them in a world far away from the narrow-minded town where they grew up, and Amber’s desire to live authentically and experience life fully could threaten the cover that Eddie has relied on. With a healthy dose of quirky humour and Irish charm, Dating Amber is an authentic and moving account of learning to love yourself first and the power of friendship along the way.
