Key moments to look out for during this year’s US election
- Election Day – November 6 (AEDT): Americans will vote in person or via post for their preferred candidate. The projected presidential winner will be announced late into the night or the morning after. Every state will need to certify the results of the election within a set time frame between November 7 and December 12 (AEDT).
- – December 18 (AEDT): Candidates need at least 270 Electoral College votes to become president. On this day, electors will meet to cast their official electoral college votes.
- Electoral votes are counted by Congress – January 7 (AEDT): Congress counts and confirms the electoral votes.
- – January 21 (AEDT): The next president of the United States is sworn into power.
